What Philosophers Have to Say About Knowing Your Worth

Apr 20, 2021

Socrates' claim that the unexamined life is not worth living makes a satisfying climax for the deeply principled arguments that Socrates presents on behalf of the philosophical life. The claim is that only in striving to come to know ourselves and to understand ourselves do our lives have any meaning or value.

Aristotle once said, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” The relationship with yourself is one of the most important relationships in your life. If you do not have a full understanding of who you are then how are others supposed to get to know you?

Brene Brown-there are no prerequisites for worthiness. I am worthy of love and belonging, but I would really be worthy of love and belonging if I lost 15 lbs, or I had a degree or I did not drink so much……there are no prerequisites for worthiness.

Worthiness is a here and now proposition. You engage with the world from a place of worthiness.

Where does the pool of shame come from that makes us feel unworthy? Families sometimes tell us what we need to be or look like to be worthy.

Eckhart Tolle

Know thyself. These words were inscribed above the entrance to the temple of Apollo at the site of the sacred Oracle. Before you ask any question first ask the most fundamental question of your life? Who am I? Knowing yourself is rooted in Being, instead of what you identify with.

The world always makes sure that you cannot fool yourself for long about who you really think you are by showing you what truly matters to you. How you react to people and situations, especially when challenges arise is the best indicator of how deeply you know yourself.

Nobody can tell you who you are.

Acknowledging the good that is already in your life is the foundation for abundance. Whatever you think the world is withholding from you, you are withholding from the world.

Try this: Whatever you think people are withholding from you-praise, appreciation, assistance, loving care, give it to them. Just act as if you have it and it will come. Then after you start giving you will start receiving. You can not receive what you do not give. Outflow determines inflow. Whatever you think the world is withholding from you, you already have, but unless you allow it to flow out, you wont even know that you have it. Give and it shall be given to you.

The source of all abundance is not outside of you. It is part of who you are. When you smile at a stranger there is already a minute of outflow of energy. You become a giver. Ask yourself often: What can I give here; how can I be of service to this person in this situation? You don’t need to own anything to feel abundant, although if you feel abundant things will almost certainly come to you.
